Fashion forward
Apparel brand brings stylish and engaging online experience to customers with the Adobe Flash Platform and Adobe Creative Suite 4 software
Since its debut in 1993, Patrizia Pepe has become a brand phenomenon that exemplifies the world-famous Italian flair for style. Today, Patrizia Pepe clothing is available in commercial hubs throughout Europe and the Far East with a growing network of retailers, showrooms, and flagship stores.
The fashion innovator, however, also connects with its hip, upscale audience through the web using video and mobile devices. The company seeks to bring the same sense of style to its websites as it does to its fashion collections. Patrizia Pepe's sites—created and delivered using the Adobe Flash Platform, including Flex and Adobe Flash Media Server, along with Adobe ColdFusion and Creative Suite 4 Web Premium software—reflect the company's high standards of creativity and attention to detail.
“The results achieved with the Patrizia Pepe corporate site and online store have been exceptional,” says Marco Ruffa, CIO for Patrizia Pepe. “Using Adobe technologies, we are communicating our brand as a fashion innovator and truly engaging with customers online—even in entertaining new ways such as multiplayer ‘advergames' that customers don't experience in our traditional stores.”
Grabbing attention, and keeping it
Today, the online store receives more than 2,200 visitors each day, with users staying nearly seven minutes on average—a statistic that is in line with some of the world's most popular websites. The e-store takes a fresh and innovative approach, designed to surprise and delight.

Project Details
“We wanted our e-store to be more than just an online catalog,” says Ruffa. “We were among the first online stores to show full-screen images and to use streaming video delivered through the Adobe Flash Platform as a background for shoppers. Our new site takes that experience to the next level.”
Patrizia Pepe offers a new micro-collection every week, enabling shoppers to continuously investigate fresh clothing looks and ideas. The site also offers streaming video of runway models showing off the latest styles, a newsletter featuring fashion trends and tips, attention-getting animations, as well as multiplayer games with real-time communication among competitors. On the back end, Patrizia Pepe's attention to detail extends to extensive site analytics, logistics, inventory management, and fast shipping to help ensure customer satisfaction.
Online brand engagement, from start to finish
Patrizia Pepe worked with Adacto—specialists in rich Internet applications (RIAs) and web and mobile communications—to create both www.patriziapepe.com and its related online store at store.patriziapepe.com. For Adacto, the Adobe Flash Platform and Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium were the clear choice for both front-end web page design as well as back-end server components for managing customer interactions and serving streaming video.
“We needed a flexible infrastructure that would enable Patrizia Pepe to add, modify and publish online modifications quickly and easily, as well as generate and analyze statistical data to optimize performance of the e-store,” says Andrea Cinelli, general manager of Adacto. “At the same time, we had to be sure that the user experience on the front-end was truly exceptional. Adobe provides an end-to-end solution that meets both requirements.”
Tailored for speed and creativity
Adacto started out with key components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium—Adobe Illustrator CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended software—to design a user interface that mirrors the company's minimalist, elegant style. The Adacto team used Adobe Fireworks CS4 software to rapidly prototype and optimize the sites, and Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 software to code landing pages, electronic newsletters, game interfaces, and other pertinent features.
“The integration among components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 streamlined site design,” says Cinelli. “Files created in one program can be efficiently moved among all of the applications, without requiring reformatting or file translation. Patrizia Pepe is a very cool brand, and its digital image must mirror its identity and value proposition. The fluid workflow Adobe Creative Suite 4 provides helped us maximize our creativity to deliver a chic, clean design.”
Making a meaningful connection
The sites are built as RIAs using Adobe Flex Builder, enabling the company to enhance the user experience and engage brand fans. According to Cinelli, Flex was the only practical option for building websites this rich and interactive. “We could have created the sites using DHTML and a common JavaScript library, but the results could have never been the same,” says Cinelli. “Flex is simple to use and its modularity allows us to quickly alter Patrizia Pepe's sites to follow the strategic needs of the company on an ongoing basis.”
Attention-grabbing streaming video, as well as social media features such as multiplayer games encoded using Adobe Media Encoder CS4 and delivered using Adobe Flash Media Server software are standout features. “Adobe Flash Media Server and Adobe Flash Player enable us to reach a broad audience and help ensure that our customers have an instant-on, high-quality video experience that builds excitement about our collections,” says Ruffa. “With new features in Flash Media Server that support social media interaction, we can continue to enrich the user experience.
Anticipating customer needs
Using Adobe ColdFusion and BlazeDS, the team created application middleware that communicates between the Flex front-end application and the company's back-end servers to manage customer communications and logistics. A console created using Adobe ColdFusion also monitors website statistics such as newsletters sent, ratings and responses on customer satisfaction surveys, and more. The solution enables the company to analyze customer behavior on the site to answer questions more effectively and even anticipate customers' impending requests.
“Adobe ColdFusion integrates perfectly with Adobe Flex, allowing us to generate and analyze statistical data from the e-store to empower us to make decisions about creating new online applications,” says Ruffa. “ColdFusion and Flex are a powerful combination that helps us continually improve the online experience.”
Two months, continual improvements
Patrizia Pepe is a digitally savvy company, with tight coordination among departments, from marketing and manufacturing to administration and logistics. With a well-orchestrated effort and help from Adobe tools, Patrizia Pepe and Adacto delivered the online store in just two months. The real beauty of the site is that it can be modified quickly, an important capability for a company that thrives on continuous changes in style.
“The e-store has been a huge success, and we were able to get it to market very quickly due to Adobe's powerful solutions for building RIAs, the integration among components of Adobe Creative Suite 4, and seamless, high-quality video content delivered using Adobe Flash Media Server,” says Ruffa. “Adobe software enabled us to fully synthesize content presentation and business-critical information in a way that continues to move Patrizia Pepe forward and make us among the best-loved brands in the business.”
